Chomsky on U.S. policy toward Iran

Paul Jay interviews Noam Chomksy on U.S. policy toward Iran:

Suppose it was true that Iran is helping insurgents in Iraq. I mean, wasn’t the United States helping insurgents when the Russians invaded Afghanistan? Did we think there was anything wrong with that? I mean, Iraq’s a country that was invaded and is under military occupation. You can’t have a serious discussion about whether someone else is interfering in it. The basic assumption underlying the discussion is that we own the world.”

    If the U.S invades Iran it works like this;

    they invaded Iran because it helped Iraq, they invaded Iraq because they helped Afghansitan, they invaded Afghanistan because they helped the Taliban.

    The travelling U.S. roadshow, coming to a neighbourhood near you.

    (p.s. the link with afghanistan is tenuous i know but it helps with the flow). never let the facts get in the way of a good story right…..

    · Hi Christiaan, glad you’re blogging again — I checked through the NZ winter but forgot for the last two months.

    · I agree with Chomsky: “Iraq’s a country that was invaded and is under military occupation. You can’t have a serious discussion about whether someone else is interfering in it. The basic assumption underlying [such a] discussion is that we [Americans] own the world.”

    · Years before George W Bush was appointed US president (by the US Supreme Court; not elected) I was saying that, about the Americans I knew of. It’s extraordinary hubris; hundreds of millions with a common solipsism (”the universe revolves around us, it’s for our use; nobody else counts, only us”). Self-centred.

    · Naturally there are exceptions whom I would call ‘ordinary people’, but my impression is that those exceptions (including most Americans who’ve come to stay in NZ) are a much smaller fraction of the US population than in all other nations.

    · I work to bolster the self-confidence of the few hundred ‘ordinary people’, Americans who belong to a couple of e-mail lists including:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/90PercentReduction
    — since they know how rare they are there. I try to assure them that they are not alone, most people in the OECD are like these rare Americans.

    David.
