No credible evidence’ of Iranian nuclear weapons

‘No credible evidence’ of Iranian nuclear weapons, says UN inspector:

The UN’s chief weapons inspector, Mohamed ElBaradei, said today he had seen “no credible evidence” that Iran is developing nuclear weapons, rejecting British intelligence allegations that a weapons programme has been going on for at least four years.

Anyone surprised by this is just a fucking plonker.

EyeTV for the iPhone

Elgato is a favourite company of mine. They produce USB TV tuners and the excellent EyeTV software for watching and recording TV on a Mac. Today they released EyeTV for the iPhone, which let’s you watch live TV or recordings on your iPhone via your Mac. As expected the experience is flawless. Now I can watch TV in bed on that odd occasion without bringing a full blown TV into the bedroom.

Update: I just realised you can watch TV anywhere you have access to a Wifi connection. Nice touch.

Whanganui or Wanganui but why not Whanganui/Wanganui

I’m in Aotearoa New Zealand for a couple of weeks and driving about provided me with the great privilege of catching up with the sea of enlightenment that is NZ talkback radio, in this case the lovely Leighton Smith. Flipping through the channels I just had to stop and listen to one of Smith’s callers complaining that if they had wanted to call Wanganui “Whanganui” all that time ago they would have used a bloody ‘F’. Suffice to say Smith didn’t offer up any wisdom to his scholarly caller.

I’m naturally inclined to side with correcting the spelling mistake but I’m also sympathetic to the view that the “Wanganui” spelling is indeed an important part of the history and culture of the area, even if originally a result of ignorance.

Which is why I have to agree with Reading the Maps on the matter. Use both.

Five essential things to know about evolution

John Timmer writing for Ars Technica:

If scientists had to pick one area of science that’s most frequently misunderstood, evolution would probably win the vote. It’s not simply the sea of misinformation available on the Internet (although that clearly doesn’t help); it also seems that a lot of people who accept the scientific evidence don’t fully appreciate some aspects of evolutionary theory. It’s one thing to remember a few examples of the compelling evidence we have for evolution; it’s another thing entirely to appreciate the features of the process that make it so incredibly powerful but, at the same time, hide many of its actions from our common experience.

NZ National/ACT government wants option to commit war crimes

No Right Turn on the NZ National/ACT government’s opposition to a new bill that would make it a national criminal offence for any New Zealand political leader to “plan, prepare, initiate or execute an act of aggression” in violation of the UN Charter.

… when Wayne Mapp says he doesn’t want our foreign policy to be subject to a UN veto, what he is really saying is that he wants to wage war in contravention of international law and the UN charter — in other words, he wants us to be a rogue nation, just like the US

Which seems to me to be a perfect example of why we must pass the bill.

NZ National/ACT government snouts in the trough

No Right Turn on the NZ National/ACT government giving themselves a pay rise during a recession and refusing to justify it.

It’s much the same situation here in the UK. Politicians have a deep sense of entitlement and non-accountability when it comes to raising their income and expenses levels, but are quite happy to spend millions of taxpayer’s money on aggressive advertising campaigns demonising low-income beneficiaries as a bunch of fraudsters.

The truth about Amersterdam vs. Bill O’Reilly 2

Bill O’Reilly being called out again out on what can only be described as his feeble fact-free attempt to paint Amersterdam as a cesspool of crime and corruption.

You can watch the original Bill O’Reilly clip here, and the Roberwter’s first response here.
