Blog from 10000 metres

I’m currently flying over Germany somewhere at about 10000 metres above sea level. Had to write a quick blog. The plane has an internet connection which I’m able to connect to wirelessly with my laptop. Things have come quite a way since I flew to London four years ago. Even managed to login into the server at work already and check the backup logs.

I just finished talking to the boss at work with the use of Skype too, a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) app; the internet’s answer to the telephone, clearer than my mobile phone and free to boot. Great stuff.

Anyway, it feels good to be on the move again, even if it is in a gas guzzling 747.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in NZ.

When website names go wrong

A workmate forwarded me this email of a bunch of websites with unintended double meanings. I almost never read such emails, let alone forward them on, but this one was good enough to blog:

Firstly there is Who Represents, a database for agencies to the rich and famous:
whorepresents.com

Second is the Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views:
expertsexchange.com

Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island:
penisland.net

An Italian Power company:
powergenitalia.com

And the Mole Station Native Nursery, based in New South Wales:
molestationnursery.com

Finally, need a therapist? Try:
therapistfinder.com

Belated introduction

So I’ve been spamming you all for a few months now, I thought it was about time I rolled out an introduction.

As some are aware, and many unaware, what you are currently reading is called a weblog, usually shortened to blog. Basically it’s a soapbox; a website consisting of periodic posts, usually in reverse chronological order. They originated—around the mid nineties when the internet was becoming popular—as running commentaries, along with links, of people’s daily Web discoveries. It was a way for those who didn’t spend much time on the Internet to check out what those who did had found. These days weblogs range from personal diaries through to influential journalistic publications. I really wish I’d had one when I was in Iraq.

This blog is aimed mostly at friends and whanau and will consist, hopefully, more of links than rants as it takes me a shit load of time to write anything legible. Mostly I hope to post stuff you’re unlikely to come across in the corporate media.

You’re encouraged to post comments. I’ve now turned off the need to register now to make it easier. Just no shenanigans or I’ll kick your ass.

Why is it called Last Straw? Well I was originally going to use it in conjunction with the straw bale work I’m doing (and intend to do in NZ), but I’m not sure about that now. I think I’ll just use it purely as a soapbox.

So what’s the point? Nothing too ambitious, just hoping to bring about the Age of Aquarius about 600 years earlier than planned.

Before I go, here’re a couple of terms you may not have come across before:
Blogroll: a list of links to other weblogs (make sure to check them out, along with all the other links)
Aggregators or newsreaders: applications that allow you to sort all the news sites, blogs and forums that you read on the net, like NetNewsWire (Mac) or FeedDemon (Windows). Highly recommended.
RSS or Atom: feeds for said aggregators
